President Andy Farber opened the meeting and asked us to introduce ourselves and to provide ideas for programs for next year. Ideas are listed below that the program committee can use to plan programs for next year.
Program Ideas
1. Using the printer/ the process of printing.
2. How to take a sharp photo: Vern to present.
3. How to take better action shots.
4. Raw Format
5. Black and White photography in digital photography
6. How to prepare a video program
7. Editing photos using Adobe/Elements

Old Business
1. Simsbury Calendar
Pictures need to be ready late September so start or keep on taking pictures. The rules are posted on the Forum.

New Business
1. Snow Policy: We do not meet if the Senior Center is closed for programs. We meet the next Monday.
2. Dues: It was voted to raise our dues for next year: It will be $15 for Granby residents and $20 for non Granby memberships.
3. Granby Camera Club Web Site: It was voted to have Rob develop a web site for the club using Host Monster.com. Rob will get two domains: The main one will be Granby Camera Club.com and the second not to use but hold will be Granby CC.com. Paula offered to use her credit card and Rob will work out the best options for the club. This web site will be one place to go for a forum, a blog, having individual sites for sharing pictures and comments and lots of other interesting options.

Program for the Evening:
Rob presented a very informative program using member photos to critique. It was
interesting to see the different options one can use when taking and editing a picture. He used a bridge program from Adobe CS to open jpegs into the raw format editing page and was able to pull out the best in each picture. Thanks Rob for a very interactive and interesting program.

MEETING NOTES FOR MAY 4, 2009

Vice President Nancy Canfield chaired our meeting in the absence of Andy Farber.

Nancy opened the meeting by asking each of us to introduce ourselves and tell us what new camera equipment we wanted to purchase next.

Treasurers Report: The current balance is $914.55.

Old Business:

· Simsbury Bank calendar – Discussed the rules and rewards of the Simsbury Bank
annual calendar program. Reminder that bank needs pictures for each month,
and to take pictures with the bank calendar in mind. The more pictures we
submit, the better chance we have of having our pictures selected. Pictures are
submitted to the bank in September.

· Club Forum: Reminder that the Forum is a great place to discuss issues, post
pictures, suggest trips, etc.
Rob suggested we create our own web page rather than rely on the current forum.
Apparently the cost is reasonable. Rob said he would research design options and
cost estimates and report back to us.

· NE Whitewater kayak competition: Rob showed us a slide show of the pictures he took at the NE kayak competition.

· Jeff Feldman: We discussed having Jeff Feldman make a presentation to our club at one of the meetings in the fall of this year or next year. Jeff takes pictures of many Connecticut waterways and recently gave a slide show of his photos to the Simsbury Camera Club. We believe he charges $75.00. The program committee will consider inviting Jeff at their meeting this summer.
An addition to the minutes - only a few members turned in photos for the Library Exhibit. The deadline date for submission for the show has been extended to May 15th. Details about the exhibit are on the forum - turn in the framed photo to the Library (let them know it is for the Exhibit).

New Business:

· Program Committee: At next months meeting we will organize a Program Committee to decide the monthly programs for 2009 – 2010. It was agreed that each of us would bring one idea to next months meeting for the program committee to consider for next year.

Harry has compiled a partial list of past club programs. He will complete the list and post it on the forum for future reference.

· Car Show: There will be an evening car show in Granby every Monday night starting in June. The show will be held on the grounds of Marks Auto Body.

Evening Presentation: Dick O’Donnell – Special Lighting Techniques.

· Tips for sunrises and sunsets:
· Bring a tripod and remote shutter release.
· Neutral density filter.
· Select location – where does sun rise and set.
· Put on manual focus, manual mode or aperture priority
· ISO of 100 or 200.
· Set white balance for twilight mode.
· Don’t look directly through lens at sun – may hurt eyes or sensor in camera.
· Alpenglow – fine particles in atmosphere. Scatters light.
· Can sometimes get the best picture of sunrise or sunset when sun is below the
horizon.
· For sunrises show up about ½ hour before sunrise.
· Meter off to the side of where sun will rise. Then open up one full stop from where
you metered.
· Fog pictures – Lakes and harbors are great. Use a fog filter.
· Look for objects for the focal point in sunrise, sunset and fog pictures.
· Check histograms – Make adjustments as necessary.

1. There has been interest in a field trip to the NE Whitewater Championships at Tariffville Gorge. The dates are April 25 and 26. Information can be found on the web site: http://www.frwa.org/ .Check out our forum for car pooling options!
2. Vern collected the pictures for the Kelly Lane Exhibit.
3. Del will be accepting framed 5X7 pictures at the May meeting for the Granby Library Exhibit. These will be up for the month of June and spend the summer exhibited at the Senior Center. Check the forum for more information.
New Business
1. Some new ideas for field trips: Lyme Rock and a Car Exhibit in New York were mentioned. The forum is the place to offer ideas!!!!

Program for the Evening:
Chief Dave Watkins spoke to us about the role of photography in crime investigation. It was very interesting to learn how important photography is and how digital cameras have been integrated into the process. Our many thanks to the Chief for spending such an informative evening with us.

3. Program Ideas for next year
Shooting Raw
Harry had a suggestion for a program. Jeff Feldman, www.jeffphotos.com, takes pictures on many of CT waterways. It was decided to have Harry and Dick talk with him and ask him to be our featured speaker the first meeting in September. It would be a nice way to reach out to more nature lovers in the community.
4. The Simsbury Camera Club has opened its program to interested photographers. This Wednesday Jeff Feldman will speak and on the first Wednesday in April Dave Middleton will be the featured speaker.

Two suggestions: The Salisbury Ski Jump on Saturday Feb 7. This includes an opportunity for a Pancake Breakfast and seeing some Ice Sculpture.

Program for the Evening: All About Lenses
Gary gave a very informative talk about lenses. He covered digital sensors, lens focal length, digital camera lens types and their best uses, apertures and depth of field. Questions were asked and it was a very informative and enjoyable presentation with lots of things for us to think about as we choose the right lens for the job!

1. Granby Camera Club Holiday Party. The date will be Saturday, January 17, 2009 to be held at Paula and Whitey Johnson’s house at 6 pm. Please email Paula: phj38@cox.net if you and a guest plan to attend. Also let her know what you will bring.
2. Junior Camera Club

Program for the Evening: Action Photography
Dick gave a very thorough presentation on action photography. He covered action in sport, wildlife and adventure. Some of his points to remember:
Make your choice of equipment before you get to site and be familiar with your subject.
Bring items for lens cleaning, extra batteries, cards, camera manual, tri or monopod, and drinking water. Know your camera; choose shooting mode (shutter, aperture, manual) and start with iso of 400. Use your histogram to check exposure, use burst mod and pan your subject to show movement. At the beach protect your camera from salt and water, out in the wild keep a safe distance from your subject, and when shooting sports get down to the playing level.

Old Business:
1. Holiday Party. It was suggested holding it during January when every ones schedules are less filled. The date will be Saturday, January 17,2009 to be held at
Paula and Whitey Johnson’s house. At the next meeting we will plan the details.
3.Simsbury Bank Calendar
The representative from the Simsbury Bank came to the meeting and announced that Rob Fisher had two pictures chosen for the calendar and Peter Dinella had one. Congratulations!!!! The club was given a check for $300. Start thinking of taking pictures now for next years calendar!!!!!
4. Junior Camera Club
Member’s children only, ages 8-15. Check the forum for more information.
5. Kelly Lane Photo Exhibit
The new exhibit with fall pictures is now up. A volunteer was requested to take on this project. Vern has volunteered. Thanks so much!!!!

7. Meeting Sign
Rob brought in the new Camera Club A-frame sign to use on the town green.
All were very pleased with its design and it was decided it would be put out
periodically.
8.Old Camera Equipment
Bob Simmons reported he had no luck finding interested buyers for the used equipment. It was suggested he post it on E-bay. Rob offered assistance.
9.The process for submitting our scavenger hunt winners to the Granby Drummer was discussed. We need to get our winning pictures to Rob and he will post them on the Blog. Andrea will take them from there and use them when space is available in the Drummer.
New Business
Program Ideas: These have been offered as ideas for future programs. If you have any to add to the list please bring your ideas to the meetings. It will make next year’s program committee’s work so much easier!!!!!

Make one of the GCC exhibits feature "Scenes of Granby."
It will provide photos that people can relate to, educate them about the beauty of Granby, and maybe get more members as a result.
. Have a Portrait Competition
Portraits really pull on your photographic talents and eliminate the emotional pull of kids and puppies No kids (under 18) or animals/pets allowed. It has to be a portrait of anyone and not be a cropped image of a larger scene.
Get Wendy Van Welie to judge them. In fact get Wendy to introduce the competition with a lecture on taking portraits.
Assign a member to do a research project once a month on a particular aspect of photography and give a report. The report would be in depth
with no "off-the-top-of-the-head" approach. Almost like a project report or budget request one does in business. Use the LCD projector. With the use of the Internet, resources are no problem.
This would put people in more that a superficial learning mode. Stretching them can help them grow beyond the snap-shot phase.

Program for the Evening: Winter Photography
Harry Fischer gave a very informative and encouraging talk about the challenges, opportunities and fun of winter photography. First it is important to dress for the weather with layers, have safe boots and special gloves for using your camera. Second, your camera has special needs in cold weather. Take extra batteries and use a zip lock bag to cover your camera and lens from the elements. Also remember to use a zip lock bag to help your camera warm up slowly after being out in the cold. Third is the challenge of getting the correct exposure for snow. Your camera meters snow as gray. You can use a gray card to meter from or use you ev button. Remember you need to let in more light. Winter lighting is just like summer…early morning and late afternoon gives the best light but try it anytime and just have fun!

More dues were collected at the end of the meeting.
Old Business:
1. Ideas were sought for the use of the money in our treasury.
2.It was suggested we have a Holiday Party. Paula was asked to host again and agreed. The dates that work will be either Friday, Dec 12 or Saturday, Dec. 13. We will decide at the next meeting.
3.Simsbury Bank Calendar
Rob was contacted and told that three pictures were chosen from our club. No names were disclosed!
4. Junior Camera Club
Member’s children only, ages 8-15. Check the forum for more information.
They will meet the third Wednesday of the month at the Granby Senior Center.
The parents will rotate responsibility to bring a snack. They will bring pictures to share as well as judge.
5. Kelly Lane Photo Exhibit
We need 6 unmatted 8x10 fall pictures. Vern, Rob and Paula have provided photographs and Cara, Tracy and Gary will leave theirs at the Senior Center by Friday, Nov.7.

JGCC meeting minutes - Oct. 22, 2008

For October 22nd's meeting Anton, Karly and Victoria were in attendance. Rob Fisher started the meeting with a presentation on Painting with Light. Afterwards, the kids took turns painting with light using glow sticks and a flashlight. We then viewed the pictures. Afterwards their scavenger hunt pictures were displayed and Vern Wells did the voting. Karly won for Leaves and Victoria and Karly tied for Favorite. The words for the next meeting are "Tile" and Favorite." We also encourage the kids to bring additional photos to the meetings to share and discuss. The meetings have been changed to the third Monday of the month at 7:00PM.

MEETING NOTES FOR
OCTOBER 2008

Rob Fisher opened the meeting by asking everyone to introduce themselves and tell the group about their photo opportunities the previous month.

Rob also expressed a desire for all of us to help make the meetings shorter by keeping to the subject at hand.

TREASURERS REPORT: Balance $391.86.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. New officers for the coming year . Andy Farber will be president. Nancy Canfield
will be vice president.
2. Kelly Lane School: We will change the exhibit to autumn colors. The new exhibit
will be set up at the school in November. There will be a place on the forum to
provide information to members who want to submit photos. You can place a small
photo on the forum site or bring an 8x10 photo to the November meeting, or earlier if
Paula suggests an earlier date. Keep checking the forum for details.
3. DUES: All members will need to pay dues for the coming year. Dues are $10.00 for
Granby residents and $15.00 for non-residents.
4. Junior Camera Club: The Junior Camera Club meets the third Wednesday after our
regular club meeting. The club is for ages 8 15, and dues are $5.00. All Granby
Camera Club members are welcome to attend the Junior Camera Club meetings.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Pictures for Judging: Send your pictures for judging for the months of November,
March and June, to Rob via email. Rob will present the pictures for judging using the
camera club projector.
2. The Forum: Paula Johnson and Nancy Canfield have achieved DSLR status for
posting at least 50 times on the forum. Next level is 100 posts.
3. Advertising on the Green: We will use the Granby Green to advertise for new
members. Rob will create a sign and make a stand and place it on the Green.
4. New Business Cards: Rob will work on a design for revising our business cards and
present it at the November meeting.
5. 20x30 pictures: Rob Floyd of South Hampton, Mass. Can produce large 20x30 prints
and display them for us.
6. 3rd annual library exhibit: We will ask the library to book the month of June 2009
for out third annual display. Theme and other details will be discussed on the forum.

Field Trips: Field trips for the month of October will be discussed on the forum.

Critiquing Pictures: Rob had three pictures sent to him for discussion. Bob Simmons submitted A boy in revolutionary war costume. Vern had pictures of Cape Cod and Sea and Clouds and Rob discussed a picture he had taken of a unique building in Milwaukee. Members joined in discussing each picture.

Program for the evening: Rob, Vern and Dick ODonnell explained the A,B,Cs of photography. Each discussed the various ways of using aperture and exposure settings, depth of field, When to use the various ISO speeds, sports photography and manual settings. Rob then went over a few pictures to demonstrate the results of using the different settings. A very informative presentation.

Granby Junior Camera Club meeting - September 17, 2008

The third Granby Junior Camera Club meeting was held on September 17, 2008 at Andy Farber’s house. In attendance were the Fishers, Canfields, and Farbers. We spent the evening viewing, commenting and critiquing a projected photo presentation of the Camera Club's monthly winners for the club year 2007 to 2008. The kids rated the pictures on a 1-10 scale and then backed up why they gave such a rating.

Only two of our junior members brought photos for the category “Adventure” and congratulations to Anton Fisher for his win with a photo he took at Devils Tower in Wyoming. Congratulations also to Bryanna Canfield for winning the category “Favorite” with her photo of a pumpkin flower. It was agreed next month the Scavenger Hunt words would be “Leaves” along with “Favorite”.

Thank you to Nancy Canfield for volunteering to bringing the brownies and strawberries.The next meeting is scheduled for October 22nd and we will meet at the Senior center room 2 at 6:00.

Rob Fisher opened the meeting and welcomed our guests. We introduced ourselves and shared our wishes for the club this year. Ideas expressed are as follows: more field trips, learn more about our cameras, more experimentation, do more camera work such as workshops, expanded use of the digital projector, better communication, and more creative photography.

$20 was collected for dues from Paula and new member Jim Devoe.

Rob, Harry and Tracy will be working on this over the summer. This is still being worked on and it was suggested to put some instructions as to how to get onto the forum.

The entries are due of September. The rules will be posted on the forum. There will be a box to put your entryies in at the Senior Center in the front office.
3.Holcomb Farm Contest

4. Camera Club for Juniors

5. Forum
Over the summer the forum was largely unused. After lengthy discussion it was decided it is a great tool for better communication and we need to encourage its use. All field trips will be coordinated there so make sure you check it out. Also ideas for programs and work- shops should be expressed there. I have started a topic for programs. Please check it out and remember this is your club so give us some input!

We started our second meeting with a make your own ice cream sandwich. In attendance were five kids and their parents. We went around the table doing introductions.

Vern Wells again did a kid friendly presentation on Composition complete with props. He stressed how important it was to get to know your camera and all the features and functions it has to offer. He shared pictures he had taken explaining rule of thirds, backlit pictures, leading lines, simplicity, and balance. The kids took turns taking pictures of his props with their cameras.

Congratulations to Karly Fisher for winning the “flower” category scavenger hunt picture with roses and Teagan Lapuk for winning the “favorite” category with a picture she took of two wild horses on the beach in North Carolina. All pictures submitted showed talent and creativity.
We discussed words for next month’s Scavenger Hunt and agreed on the words "Adventure" and "Favorite" for our next meeting in August, date TBA. Again, photo size suggested was 4x6 or 5x7. Each child can enter one photo into each category. Please bring your photos to our next meeting. We encourage your children to bring any pictures they took and would like to share with the group, perhaps ones that they considered entering for the contest.

We are planning to meet once a month with the juniors and hope to agree on a date to do a field trip to Stanley Park in Westfield, MA.

Junior Camera Club Meeting - Minutes - June 29, 2008

We started our meeting with a pizza social and let the kids get to know each other. In attendance were six kids and their parents. We went around the table stating name, age, and how long we have been taking pictures.

Vern Wells did a kid friendly presentation on Composition complete with props. Among other topics he discussed what goes into taking a good photo. Key points that he made included lighting, subject, framing, position of subjects, and ensuring that you strive to take sharp focused pictures. The kids took turns taking pictures of his props with their cameras. The adults took pictures of the kids taking pictures.

We discussed the Scavenger Hunt and we agreed on the words "Flower" and "Favorite". Photo size suggested was 4x6 or 5x7. Each child can enter one photo into each category. Please bring your photos to our next meeting.

The next meeting will be July 14th @ 6:00. Vern will be doing the interactive presentation on Composition again.

2. Granby Library Exhibit
The 2nd Annual GCC Photo Exhibit is now displayed at the Granby Public Library for the month of June. For July and August, this exhibit will be set up again in the community room of the Senior Center. Eleven members contributed twenty one photos. Next year we will ask for the photographs to be brought to the April meeting so it is easier for Del and his group to plan the exhibit.Thanks to Del, Tracy, and Rob for setting up the exhibit! I have received some very positive comments about the exhibit so make sure you all go by for a look!
3.Holcomb Farm Contest
Marty Council from the Holcomb Farm came to the meeting to discuss any questions concerning the contest. You can check out the Holcomb Farm Web site for details. www.holcombfarm.org or www.holcombphoto.org
The theme this year is Products of Agriculture.
4. Pbase.com
Rob will set up an account for our club to post our photographs for viewing. Members will have special sub- folders for their pictures. We discussed how we can protect our photos from being copied and used with out our consent. Adding watermarks to the photos was discussed. Rob will let us know when to send your pictures and he will post them. He can use these for our opening fall program “Camera Club on Parade”. If you do not wish to post your photos but wish to have them in the presentation just let Rob know! These photos can be any of your favorite pictures ..no topic!!!!!

Program for the Evening: Painting with Light: Rob Fisher
This very informative program covering light techniques, types of painting with light, and different kinds of light sources.
Basic conditions used when painting with light: usually done in low light outdoors at night or in an unlighted room, slow shutter speed- few seconds to several minutes, and lighting source that has movement.
Types of light painting: line drawing effect, area lighting effect, paint smearing effect, combination of effects, combining regular photography with light painting photography.
Different kinds of light sources will vary from a flashlights to a mini-mag. Try different lights. .Experiment!!!!
After the program some stayed and did experiment!

Rob Fisher opened the meeting and welcomed our guests. We introduced ourselves and shared how we have our photos printed. There was a wide variety from printing our own to when in a panic rush to CVS. Some use on line Shutterfly and Snapfish as well as Ritz Camera in Simsbury and Moto Photo in Avon. Costco was also an option. It was noted that Kirkland Photo Paper from Costco is excellent and is most reasonably priced.

Program for the Evening: Flash Photography
Wendy Van Welie, Indigo Images Studio was our guest speaker.
Wendy shared her knowledge and experiences with flash photography. She went over the following subjects: flash and light fall off, coping with red eye, flash exposure and how the camera controls exposure, flash range, and working with a second flash. A hand out covers these and other ideas to help us in our flash photography.
Some things to think about:
Flash photography is always a challenge
Digital is Different:
Digital flash exposure is different than film
Light fall off is different for digital
Four types of flash we use: in camera, pop up, add on, and ring flash
In the add on flash, ETTl works with the internal metering system of your camera.
Use the spot meter in your camera
White balance. If you shoot raw you can do this in your computer.

After the exhibit is finished the pictures will be hung at the Granby Senior Center for July and August.

4. Kelly Lane School Picture Exhibit
We received a letter from the principal thanking the club for our photographs on display. We will leave the current pictures up through the summer.
5. Holcomb Farm Contest

Program for the Evening
Peter Dinella reviewed our points for critiquing a photograph: composition, visual impact, technical, and creativity/originality. We then broke up into three groups and were given a photo from the Simsbury Bank Calendar. Each group critiqued their picture and shared their conclusion with the other groups. Good discussion and definitely a learning opportunity. Thanks Peter!!

Meeting Notes for March 3, 2008

Rob Fisher opened the meeting with a welcome to new attendees. Everyone introduced themselves by giving their thoughts on the new on-line forum.

Treasurer's Report: $376.86 as of February 6.
No dues were collected.

Programs Planned: Next month Peter will take us through the process of judging pictures. He suggested reviewing the Simsbury Calendar pictures before the meeting, as we will be critiquing those pictures.

Field Trips: Future Field trips were discussed. The Auto Show in New York City was suggested. Dates are from March 21 through March 30. For directions or more information, contact Dick O'Donnell.

Welcome Letter: A draft of a welcome letter for new members was presented to Rob. The draft will be reviewed by Harry, Rob and Tracy sometime during March and discussed with the members at the next meeting.

Class on Photoshop: Stu Weatherbee is conducting classes on Photoshop CS3 in South Hampton Mass. If you are interested, contact Rob for information.

Scavenger Hunt words for March: Wind, Delicate, Favorite.

A question was posed about posting more than one picture from the Scavenger Hunt on the Forum. This item is being discussed on the club Forum. The results will be discussed at the next meeting.

Evening Program: A program entitled "The Process of Taking a Picture" was presented by Tom Burbank. Tom provided a short history of photography and the types of equipment used. Over time, the film and cameras became smaller and smaller. Leica had a big influence on film cameras and now digital.

Tom discussed different things we should do before snapping the shutter. When looking at the subject, ask yourself some questions: What are you trying to say? Move around. What is the best angle? Fill the frame and look around the view finder to be sure you have only the items in the picture you want. Tom showed us some photo examples of applying the above criteria when taking a picture. He also discussed using Photoshop to clean up the picture.

Tom then went around the room and asked everyone to explain how they approach the process of making a photograph into a picture.

Paula said (in abstention) that when taking action shot, to pre-focus and then use burst mode. Hopefully getting one picture.

Discussion on the Forum: Rob then made a presentation on how to log into the Forum, how to register yourself, posting items in the many categories and include pictures. Everyone is encouraged to register and begin using the Forum for discussing any issue of interest to you.

From color to B&W to color

With Photoshop you can convert a color image to B&W, and then "paint in, or reveal, the existing color only in the areas you want. In this case, I wanted to show only the boy's blue/grey hat and his blue/grey eyes. I also blurred the entire inage and "painted in" only the important areas.

Dick took a great photo of an owl, and maybe putting it on the GCC site distorted the shadows.

Anyway, for those interested, post-processing of your images can change things dramatically and reveal your true intention. It took under one minute in Photoshop to show the beauty of Dick's shot.

We held our meeting at Indigo Images, Wendy Van Welie’s studio. Rob opened the meeting, welcomed our guests and asked us to introduce ourselves. He asked us to share any photography related Xmas gifts.

1. The Simsbury Bank Calendar
The calendars are here and Rob has a supply to hand out. Start taking pictures for next year’s entries!
2. Projector
Now that our treasury has grown it was agreed to look into buying a projector for viewing images. Dick reported that the best price was a Dell and next a Cannon. Members are going to google to check out reviews. A good site to check out electronics is:www.newegg.com. There is still some indecision as to which model we should buy. Rob and the officers will continue to take information and come to a decision.
3. Club Social
The party will be at Paula’s home on Jan. 19 Those at the meeting signed up to bring either an appetizer, salad or dessert, as well to their preference to drinks. I will send out an email invitation to reach those that were not there or who forgot to sign up!

Discussion: Peter brought up three questions for discuss: Why do people take pictures? Why do we store so many photographs? And why is there a different perception between art and photography?

Program for The Evening
Wendy Van Welie shared her passion for photography, emphasizing that we shoot, shoot, and shoot some more! Always have your camera with you so you don’t miss that special opportunity. She also felt we should print more pictures as with digital it is so easy to just store your pictures and as technology changes you will not resave and lose those pictures. We had a tour of her studio and learned about her photographic interests and talents. Many thanks to Wendy for such an enjoyable, interesting and informative evening.

MEETING NOTES FOR Dec 3, 2007

Rob opened the meeting, welcomed our guests and asked us to introduce ourselves. The last meeting Rob had asked us to talk about our favorite photograph. Some members brought in theirs to share with the group.

Treasurer's Report: Balance Dec 3, 2007 $764.59

Old Business:
1. The Simsbury Bank Calendar
The representative from the bank attended to announce that Rob, Lani, and Vern had pictures chosen for the calendar. Congratulations!!!! $ 300 will come to the club through their talent!
2.Kelly Lane School Exhibit
New fall pictures have been hung and Rob will get his picture of Christensens pond to Paula to be added to the exhibit.
3. Granby Pub and Grill
They are still waiting but plan on using old pictures from the Salmon Brook Historical Society that Peter had scanned and brought back to life.
4. Club Social
The party will be at Paula's home on Jan. 19 with a back up date of the 26th. Please let me know if the 19th is bad for you so we can get a feel as to which date works best. We will order a main chicken dish from Kanes and have members bring the rest. At the next meeting Paula will have a sign up sheet to for things to bring and to get ideas as to beverages we all like!

Addtional Saw Whet Owl Images

Here are some additional images of these diminutive creatures. These owls are approximately 6 inches in height and redefine the word "adorable". They of course, hunt after dark and fly low to the forest floor in search of voles. They are temporarily netted and particular vitals are documented. After a brief visit with the giant humans they are off and hunting again. I particularly like the phot of Rob holding the stuffed owls they sell to help the banding efforts. :>)

Here are some photos that I got while out shooting owls. Animal activists stop writing emails, we were shooting them with our cameras. I would like to say thank you to the fine folks that were banding these beautiful creatures for your very warm hospitality on a clear chilly night. Thank you to Gary as well for sharing this opportunity with me.

2. The Simsbury Bank Calendar Contest accepted three of our member’s photos. They were wondering why more of our club members did not participate. If you have any concerns about their rules let Rob know and he will pass them on .

Program for the Evening: Digital 101
Our discussion ranged from media cards, camera lens, and file sizes. Most of us shot using J Peg, which is a 8 bit file. Tiff is also a 8 bit file but non compressed so you have more of the original information. Raw is a 12 bit file and records all information the camera sees. It allows more editing before working in either jpeg or tiff.
All agreed that it was important to save your original pictures, unedited. Rename your file and start your editing.

Program for the Evening: How your Camera Catches Light
Rob Fisher, Dick O’Donnell, and Vern Wells gave a very informative presentation from that covered the three important factors in controlling Light!

ISO : level of sensitivity to light :on the digital camera’s sensor and of your film .

Shutter Speed: Amount of time the shutter opens to record light. Rules are the same for digital and film cameras.

Aperture: Is the hole, an opening in the lens through which light passes to a digital camera’s sensor or film camera’s film A diaphram constructed of flat blades opens and closes to control the amount of light.

The relationship of these three will control what our camera records. It was an excellent program and gave us all a lot to think about as we use our cameras.

September 2007 meeting minutes

Rob opened the meeting and asked each member to introduce themselves and to give their thoughts about what they want to gain from this years meetings.

Old Business:
1. The Camera Club exhibit at the Library in June was a great success. After it was taken down the pictures were hung in the community room at the Senior Center. They will stay there until our next meeting in Oct. All decided they would like to do the same next year in June. Del will pass on the information to Joan Fox at the Library.
Congratulation to Peter Dinella, whose picture was chosen for the new library card.
2. The pictures that are hung at Kelly Lane School will stay until Nov. At that time we will put up pictures we have taken of the fall foliage.
3. Three photo contest opportunities:
Simsbury Bank Calendar: Rob will email the rules. Your CD with your pictures and 4x6 prints need to be left at the Senior Center by the end of Sept.
Holcomb Farm Contest: Paula will email the rules.
Granby Land Trust Art Show: Check out their web page for information
4. Club Social will be held at Paula's house with a Nov. date to be firmed up at the next meeting.
5. The Granby Grill is still looking for some pictures for their walls as they get ready for opening. Peter suggested using some of the old historic pictures that have been scanned from the Historical Society files. If you have Granby pictures that you would like to share put small jpeg files on a cd and contact Rob.
6. There seems to be a lot of interest in learning about Photo Shop. We will continue the discussion as to how we manage this. One option would be to use the Drummer computers when available. The Senior Center lab has an older version of Elements that the club bought. It might also be possible to have someone come in and teach an introduction using a computer and screen.

A-10 Landing - 160 knots

Taken at about 100 feet with a Nikon D200 using a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR lens. Set camera for continuous high-speed shutter and continuous focus at about 1/400 sec., ISO 200.

Plane passed me going about 160 knots according to the pilot.

I has special permission to be on the median between two runways.

The plane is an A-10 designed to knock out tanks with 30mm rapid -fire canon in the nose. You've seen it at the Granby Memorial Day Parade flyovers.

The plane was flown by my neighbor.

The tire smoke was supplied at my request.

This plane is a flying gray card, so white balance was a snap.

1. Granby Library Card Pictures
It was noted that Peter Dinella has submitted a picture and the Library board and Joan Fox have not chosen the picture they will use for the new card.
2. Library Photography Exhibit
The exhibit is in place and will remain for the month of June so make sure you all stop in to see it. Job well done!
3. Kelly Lane Photography Exhibit
The pictures are hung and can stay until we decide to replace them.
4. Simsbury Calendar
Don’t forget to be taking pictures for next years calendar. The guide lines for submissions will be posted on the blog. The photos need to be ready early September.

New Business:
1. A program committee was formed to plan next year’s programs. Dick, Nancy, Tom, and Rob agreed to serve! Please do some brain- storming and let them know what you would like!!!!!!!
2.Field Trip Planned
Kayaking at the Tariffville Gorge field trip has been planned. Those interested in joining this trip meet at the Granby Senior Center on Wednesday, June 13 at 5:15 pm to car pool. Bring insect repellent and your camera gear!
3.If anyone is interested in a field trip to Stanley Park email Rob to coordinate a time etc.
4. We will plan a social for the fall.

Vern gave an excellent presentation on Composition using his study guide and slides to demonstrate the principles for improving the composition of our photographs! Thanks Vern!!!!!!

1. Granby Library Card Pictures
Joan Fox would like some more pictures to choose from. Remember that the library information will be printed over the picture. Please leave your 4x6 pictures at the Library for Joan.
2. Library Photography Exhibit
Each club member is asked to bring in:

1 photo 8x10 matted in black frames
If you wish you may also bring in 4x6 matted in a black frame.

We will hang six 8x10 photos at Kelly Lane. It was decided we would have nature/animal theme. Maddie, Dick, and Del will leave their unframed pictures at the Senior Center for Paula to pick up by Wednesday May 23. Rob and Paula will also have pictures and Gary will be asked also.
4. Simsbury Calendar
The Bank asked if we were willing to resubmit our pictures from last year. Those of us that participated in the contest agreed to this suggestion.
Don’t forget to be taking pictures for next years calendar.

Fun making panoramas

Stephen & Nancy Hayes house and goat farm on North Granby Road. I stitched about 6 photos together to get this shot. Panoramas are good to document farms, etc. to show entire farm rather than pieces. It would be impossible to get this shot except with a fisheye lens, but that distorts and is not apporopriate for this kind of work. This photo covers about 180 degrees.

Indoor Lighting

I've had some fun recently learning the art/science of indoor lighting. Using two umbrella flood lights and a bounce flash, I took this photo of my niece's son. One-year old skin is a real challenge and without soft lighting I would have never captured it. It's worth thinking about expanding your understanding of all light situations. Wendie Van Welie helped me to better understand the intricacies of this type of lighting.

"Blazing a Trail"

In my last post I referred, erroneously, to the falls on Firetown Road as "White Blazes." More accurately, "blazes" are the marks on a tree to indicate a trail. Now, at least, I know the derivation of the expression "blazing a trail." My ignorance from the misfortunes of living in New Jersey for 62 years.

Idiot-Proof Directions to "White Blazes" - Firetown Road

I know these directions are idiot proof because I wrote them! After several failed attempts to find the falls, I finally did...with my ears.

Anyway, the falls (White Blazes) are exactly 2.0 miles after making the right turn onto Firetown Road off Simsbury Road. On the left there will be a sign reading "Eddy Loop Trail" - McLean Game Preserve. There are spaces for about 4-6 cars.

The falls are across the street (compass reading 240 degree SW). You'll hear them.

I took this photo with a polarizer, a split neutral density filter, using a 17mm. Nikkor lens. Bring boots.

This is the photo that Peter refers to below. A nearly black storm sky to the north, and sun coming through the clouds to the south, lit the tree in a striking way against the dark sky. This kind of lighting can't be arranged. You just have to be willing to chase it when it happens, and have your camera ready.

Rob opened the meeting and asked us to all to introduce ourselves with a comment about camera equipment we wish to buy or sell.

1. Del received Pictures from club members to give to the Granby Library as they design a new card.

3. Kelly Lane would also like a picture display. It was decided we would set that up after the Library display, using the same frames. How often we change the pictures is up to the club. Paula will coordinate. We plan to put up pictures before September.

New Business:
1. Rob will organize a field trip to the McLean and Enders Falls.
Program:
Using the new criteria for evaluation sheet that Peter designed we broke up into four groups. Each group was given a photo from the Simsbury Calendar and we judged it using the evaluation sheet. Each group reported its decision to the others and theere was lots of good conversation. It was an excellent way to really study a photo and we all felt it would help us as we take our shots. Thanks Peter for a job w ell done!

Andrea's Tree at Mary Edwards-My lens test

I tested my new 18-70 Nikon lens today on the the same tree Andrea photographed and showed us yesterday. While I'm pleased with the results the lens provided, the photo can't come close to Andrea's . Her composition with that sky shows how important light is to the overall visual impact of a photograph, among other things.

Just bought Nikon Coolpix P5000

I tested my new Nikon (see photo) and was pleased with the color and clarity (10MP). I wanted a serious point-and-shoot in case I captured a good shot. Previously, I used a 6MP Canon P&S but was not satisfied with the color. The P5000 used the Nikon D80 color chip/software and produces the color I am used to.

While it does not replace the fun of shooting with a DSLR, try putting one in your pocket!

Working with a 10 MP P&S is a delight.

Alert! Costco Photo Paper

Costo photo paper, which I highly recommended at one of our meetings, has switched suppliers.

Formerly, the paper was made in Switzerland (125 sheets) and now it is made in the USA (150 sheets) - same price.

I did a quality check and found no difference between the Swiss and the US paper.

I tested the US paper on an Epson R1800 printer against know color pattern prints and found no difference.

Bottom line: 25 more sheets for the same price; I will continue to buy.

1. Granby Library has asked the Club to submit photos to use for their new library cards. Bring up to three photos, 4x6 in size. Remember that the cards will be 3x4 or wallet size so take that into consideration as you chose a photo. The pictures should be a Granby picture and preferably not the Oak or Library( per Granby Library Board)!
2.The Kelly Lane Principal, Bob Gilbert called and asked if the Club would like to hang pictures in the entry area of the school. Paula will call him and get more information as to the security of the pictures, how many we hang, and how often we would need to change them. She will also go to Michaels and buy several 11x14 frames that could be used so we would only need to change the picture.
3. The Granby Chamber of Commerce has asked if the Club would contribute Granby pictures for their Web Page. Peter will follow up and get more information: how do we get our pictures to them and could we hyper-link the pictures back to our blog?
4. The Holcomb Farm has expressed an interest in pictures by the club. Paula will follow up.
5. Don’t forget: Our blog has links to member’s web pages.
6. Field Trips: no new ideas so keep thinking!

New! 10MP Nikon Coolpix P5000 Camera-$400

This is tempting for Nikon owners who want a point-and-shoot they can carry around without lugging a 10 lb. camera bag loaded with SLR stuff. It's 10 MP and has an ISO of 64 for those big enlargements. While it doesn't handle RAW, the JPG files are processed with the same engine that's in the Nikon D80 SLR.

I may get one and dump my Canon point-and-shoot.

Roadmap to Outstanding Photos

This model is tied in with our assessment form and basic photo concepts. The guidelines in and around the arrow are processes; the result is an outcome - Visual Impact.

Without Visual Impact you have nothing but a snapshot. That's the conclusion I came to after working on this model.

Comments and suggestions for improvement are welcome. Models are models not litany, so don't be shy.

Microsoft Office Picture Manager

If you buy the new Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 software, you also get MS Office Picture Manager with it . A pretty good package to get your digital photos in shape...simple...and pretty sophisticated/powerful. One caveat: it only works with JPEG files, but that's what most people shoot anyway. Very intuitve; quick learning curve.

Don't dump your old lenses, yet

I nearly sold all my old Nikkor AI lenses (35/40 years old), but got such a miserable price quote for them at B&H I decided to keep them. Am I happy! They fit my Nikon D100/200, and except for auto focus they maintain all their functionality. They are "prime lenses" rather than zoom and I decided to test out their sharness, resolution ,etc. The attached photo is a sample.

Generally speaking, prime lenses are a little sharper than zooms, especially if you intent to enlarge big. The thing I really like about the old lenses is that they have the depth-of-field marks on the lens barrel which are generally not on autofocus lenses.

Here is a shot that I got while out with Harry Fischer at the Salisbury Ski Jump. I could not believe that he actually jumped or that he wore that orange outfit. Just kidding that is not Harry.
